Carl August Liner (born June 8, 1871 in St. Gallen ; † March 20, 1946 in Appenzell ) was a Swiss painter , draftsman , graphic artist and inventor .

Life

Carl August Liner came from a large family of craftsmen, studied from 1890 to 1893 with Johann Caspar Herterich (painting class) and Paul Hoecker ( open-air painting) at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich , was a drawing teacher and illustrator in St. Gallen in 1894, traveled to 1897 to 1899 Rome, Terracina and Paris. In 1901 he was offered a professorship by the Düsseldorf Art Academy , which he refused.

In 1902 Liner married Cécile, née Bernet, and in 1906 bought a farm on the Unterrain near Appenzell. In 1913, Liner founded the St. Gallen section of the GSMBA (Society of Swiss Painters and Sculptors), of which he became president.

In 1914 his son Carl Walter Liner was born to him and followed in his footsteps. The Museum Liner Appenzell, now the Art Museum Appenzell , was opened in 1998 in honor of the life's work of father and son .

The artistic work

Liner painted landscapes, rural people and especially children. He designed postage stamps and posters and illustrated magazines.
