The Grossmünster Chapel (usually referred to as the “Helfereikapelle”) is an Evangelical Reformed chapel opposite the Grossmünster on the corner of Münstergasse and Kirchgasse in the old town of Zurich .

history

When the Grossmünsterstift was dissolved in 1832, the French parish lost its place of worship. In place of the Müsegg house, which was demolished in 1661 , the architect Johann Jakob Breitinger built the Grossmünster Chapel between 1858 and 1860. Architect Manuel Pauli rebuilt it from 1972 to 1974. A renovation took place in the 2010s.

Building description

The Grossmünster Chapel is located on the corner between the ascending Kirchgasse and the level Müstergasse, near the Grossmünster and opposite the neo-Romanesque Grossmünster Schoolhouse, which is now the headquarters of the Theological Faculty of the University of Zurich . This consists of an extension and a part inserted into the medieval Helferei house .

The Grossmünster Chapel is a polygonal building in the English Tudor Gothic style . The outer shell consists of sandstone blocks and is structured by buttresses and pointed arch windows. On the west side, Johann Jakob Breitinger designed a neo-Gothic fountain, next to it an outside staircase leads from Münstergasse to the chapel. However, the most common access used today is the house entrance to the Helferei on Kirchgasse.

The transverse interior of the chapel , which can hold 200 people, is structured by neo-Gothic pillars, which stand on massive plinths and continue on the ceiling in vaulted ribs. The walls are paneled high up to the door , the floor is covered with dark parquet. The neo-Gothic pulpit on the east wall and the lead-glazed windows by Johann Jakob Röttinger date from the time it was built . During the most recent renovation, flat elements were attached to the east wall to improve the acoustics in the church.

Organs

In 1897 the Grossmünsterkapelle received an organ that was built by Carl Theodor Kuhn , Männedorf. It was an instrument with five registers on a manual and an attached pedal . In 1917, a pneumatic membrane shutter organ was also built by Carl Theodor Kuhn, Männedorf, with twelve stops on two manuals and a pedal.

In 1967 a Toggenburg house organ was installed in the chapel , which was built in 1754 by Wendelin Looser, Kappel. This instrument has six registers on one manual and was restored by Orgelbau Kuhn AG in Männedorf. This instrument had been in the old epileptic asylum in the 1950s and 1960s, from where it was then transferred to the Helferkapelle of the Grossmünster.
