When the place was named the administrative seat of Clarke County in 1832, it experienced a considerable boom. In the late 19th century, many forest and wood industries (including sawmills and paper mills ) also settled here. The name of the place was due to the location on a grove (English: grove ) on a hill (English: hill ) selected. Today, most of the residents work at the Grove Hill Memorial Hospital , built in 1949 .
