Grusonia vilis is a species of plant in the genus Grusonia fromthe cactus family (Cactaceae). The specific epithet vilis means 'cheap, cheap, contemptible'.
description
Grusonia vilis grows crawling and forms mats several meters wide and 10 to 15 centimeters high. The initially prostrate sections of the shoot become ascending or upright over time. Terminal shoot sections are vertical. They are light green, club-shaped, swollen, low-humped and up to 5 centimeters long. Young areoles are woolly white. The reddish thorns on the prostrate shoot sections are twisting, somewhat roughened and have a white tip. The thorns of the club-shaped shoot sections are reddish with a yellowish white tip and 1 to 4 centimeters long. There are more than twelve radial spines.
The bright purple flowers reach lengths of up to 4 centimeters. The light green, tuberous and thorny fruits turn darker as they dry. They are 2.5 to 3 inches long.
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Grusonia vilis is common in the Mexican states of Chihuahua , Durango , San Luis Potosí and Zacatecas at altitudes of 1195 to 1900 meters.
It was first described as Opuntia vilis in 1909 by Joseph Nelson Rose . Harold Ernest Robinson placed the species in 1973 in the genus Grusonia . A synonym is Corynopuntia vilis (Rose) FMKnuth (1936).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered. The future development of the populations is unknown.
