The guanine deaminase is the enzyme that the deamination of guanine to xanthine catalyzed . This reaction step, which occurs in all living things, leads to the breakdown of guanine, which in humans ends with uric acid after the next step .

A splice variant of guanine deaminase called cypine is involved in the development of the nervous system; it has a function in regulating the branching of dendritic cells . Increased cypin expression is triggered by the growth factor BDNF . In the liver, the GDA value is increased when there is damage.

The catalyzed reaction:

Guanine+ H 2 O   + NH 3   Xanthine

Guanine is deaminated and xanthine is produced.
