Guglielmo Pepe (born February 13, 1783 in Squillace , Calabria , † August 8, 1855 in Turin ) was a Neapolitan general .

Life

Like his brother Florestano Pepe, Guglielmo served from 1799 as an officer in the army of the Parthenopean Republic , which was formed after the collapse of the feudal-absolutist Bourbon rule and the entry of French troops in 1799, then went to the Franco-Italian Legion, exiled by the returning Bourbons Dijon. Pepe returned to Italy with Napoleon I. In 1800 he took part in the Battle of Marengo , took part in the actions of anti-French brigands in central Italy. An attempted revolt in Calabria ended with his conviction in 1801 to life imprisonment , from which he escaped through the installation of Joseph Bonaparte as King of Naples in 1806. 1811-1813 he was brigade commander in Spain, 1814/15 under the French Marshal Joachim Murat , then rose to lieutenant general . In 1820/21 he led the failed bourgeois revolution in the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies (Naples), was commander in chief of the constitutionalist army and then went to Great Britain after the revolution was suppressed.

Once again sentenced to death, he was only able to return to Naples after the amnesty issued in 1848 , but immediately took the lead in the army of 16,000 men sent from Naples to fight the Austrians in Lombardy . Although he was recalled, he took part, contrary to royal orders, in 1848/49 with 2,000 men in the fight against the foreign enemy and finally went to Venice , where he provided essential services in defending it against Austria. After the city was surrendered, he fled on a French ship in 1849 to live in Paris. In 1851 he went after Napoleon III came to power . to Turin, where he died on August 8, 1855.
