Guido Valadares

Guido Valadares (born June 12, 1934 in Dili , Portuguese Timor ; † August 30, 1976 in Madabate , Lequidoe administrative office ) was a politician from East Timor .

Life

In 1959 Valadares completed a medical course and from 1960 worked in various posts in the Portuguese Timorese medical service. In 1971 he became the chief nurse of the Dr Antonio Carvalho Hospital .

Valadares was a member of the central committee of FRETILIN . In the government of the Democratic Republic of East Timor, which was proclaimed on November 28, 1975, he became Deputy Minister for Labor and Social Affairs. Nine days later, Indonesia began a large-scale invasion of East Timor. Valadares left his wife and five children and helped organize the armed resistance, especially medical care. On August 30, 1976, he and three comrades died in a mine in Madabate (Lequidoe administrative office, Aileu municipality ). On September 1st he was buried in Bereleu (Lequidoe).

After Valadares, the Dili National Hospital was renamed “ Hospital Nacional Guido Valadares ” ( tetum Ospitál Nasionál Guido Valadares ) on June 29, 2003 . His widow Maria Valadares was a member of the first national parliament after the independence of East Timor (2001-2007). The couple had a daughter.
