Maria da Costa Valadares (* 1948 or 1949 ) is a politician from East Timor . She is a member of the Associação Social-Democrata de Timor (ASDT).

Career

Maria is the widow of FRETILIN activist Guido Valadares , who died in 1976 in a mine in the war against the Indonesian occupation. The couple had a daughter

In 1994 Maria Valadares was a member of an East Timorese delegation that visited the Portuguese pilgrimage site of Fátima . Since the group included some supporters of East Timor’s integration in Indonesia, such as Francisco Lopes da Cruz , Valadares was also accused of supporting the Indonesian occupation that had lasted since 1975.

After the withdrawal of the Indonesians in 1999 Valadares was in the 2001 elections, voted # 4 of ASDT list in the Constituent Assembly. Here she was particularly committed to the protection of women's rights in the constitution and the formulation of section 17 of the constitution on equality between women and men.

With the independence of East Timor on May 20, 2002 , the assembly became a national parliament and a member of Valadares. Here she was a member of Commission E (Commission on Poverty Elimination, Rural and Regional Development and Gender Equality).

In 2006, Valadares was elected the first female vice-president of the ASDT for four years, but did not stand for the parliamentary elections in June 2007 .
