Guillaume Desdames

Guillaume Desdames (in Poland Wilhelm Desdames ; * around 1622 ; † June 1, 1692 in Krakow , Kingdom of Poland ) was a French Roman Catholic priest and friar of the missionaries of St. Vincent de Paul (Lazarists). He was superior of several convents of the order in Poland, head of the seminary and provost in Chełmno .

Life

Guillaume Desdames came from Rouen . In 1645, at the age of 23, he entered the order of the Lazarists and was ordained a monk and priest there in 1648.

In 1651 Desdames was in a small group that founded the Order's first convent in Poland in Warsaw . In 1652 he was probably superior (head) of the branch in Sokółka , then in Warsaw (1653–1654, 1658–1668). In 1659 he was called back to France.

In 1676 Guillaume Desdames was back in Poland as superior of the new branch in Chełmno . In this function he also took over the management of the seminary and the city ​​school , and in 1680 the provost of the city ​​church of St. Mary .

In 1685 Dssdames was again in France at the general assembly of the order. When he died in 1692, he was superior in Krakow .

Guillaume Desdames did not speak Polish when he came to the country, but later translated a French prayer book into that language.
