Guillaume (III.) De Courcy (* 1362 - † October 25, 1415 at the Battle of Azincourt ) was a French nobleman and military man. He was previously the governor of Paris .

Life

In 1388 he was one of the commanders who secured the Norman coast, which was threatened by the English. Around 1390 he was chamberlain to King Charles VI. He was one of the officers around Isabelle de Valois , who married the English King Richard II in 1396 , as did his wife Marguerite (aka Françoise) de Paynel, who was at the head of the entourage. After the deposition (1399) and assassination (1400) of Richards, Guillaume de Courcy was the ambassador of the French king in England. In 1401 the couple returned to France, where Guillaume de Courcy then became captain and governor of Paris.

He fell on October 25, 1415 at the Battle of Azincourt, as did his brother Georges de Courcy.

marriage and family

Guillaume de Courcy probably first married Anne, Dame de Bourg-Achard, daughter of Jean Malet, and consequently married Marguerite (alias Françoise) Paynel (* 1372), Lady of Honor of the Queen of England, 1399 member of the Order of the Garter ( Lady of the Garter ), daughter of Guillaume Paynel, Seigneur de Hambye , or Nicolas Paynel and Jacquemin de Haveskercke; she received (probably 1417) from King Henry V safe escort from the besieged Falaise , and in 1418 all her goods confiscated during the war between England and France were returned.

The children of Guillaume de Courcy and Marguerite / Françoise Paynel are:

  • Guillaume (IV.) De Courcy, called le Jeune († after 1467), Chevalier, Baron de Courcy; ∞ Anne d'Enfernet (or Amphernet), Dame de Magny
  • Richard de Courcy, knight, Seigneur du Plessis et de Roye, prisoner of the English around 1424; ∞ Colette (alias Jeanne) de Lyon (alias Lizar), both attested in 1448 and 1462
  • Robert de Courcy († after 1467), spiritual, called Chapelain de Courcy
