Sidney "Guitar Crusher" Selby (also known as "Bone Crusher"; born July 28, 1931 in Hyde County , North Carolina ; † September 23, 2020 ) was an American blues musician living in Germany .

Life

As a boy, Selby sang the baritone in the church choir of Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church.

At 15 he went to New York to pursue a career as a blues and gospel musician - far removed from the more conservative ideas of his grandparents. In 1960 his first single, Cuddle Up , came out on his own label T&S. More singles for Bethlehem, King, Blue Horizon and CBS-Columbia followed, and the press also noticed him. He got his nickname "Guitar Crusher" because he sometimes used unusual methods as a bouncer in a New York club: He once carried rioting guests to the door with his guitar as a "baton".

From New York, he went on various tours, including with Ben E. King , the Drifters and the Isley Brothers . His own band was called "The Gospel Wings". Then he founded "The Midnight Rockers", which later changed its name to "The Houserocking Mellotones".

In 1982 he came to Europe with Nick Katzman , where he was named "The Big Voice from New York". Here he played at many major festivals with European and American artists, such as Katie Webster , Reggie Moore , EB Davis , "Detroit" Gary Wiggins and Chris Rannenberg , among others in the Berlin Blues Café and became an integral part of the European blues scene.

In 2013, the documentary The Big Voice from New York: Guitar Crusher - a Biography , made by students of the Digital Media Faculty at Furtwangen University , was released.

Guitar Crusher was already a legend during his lifetime and his albums are considered collectors' worth. Selby was married to Mara von Hartz-Selby, who also directed his management. He is the grandfather of Sidney Selby III, known by the stage name Desiigner .
