Gary Allen "Detroit" Wiggins (born November 10, 1952 in Inkster , Michigan ) is an American jazz and blues musician ( soprano , tenor and alto saxophone ).

Live and act

Wiggins grew up in Detroit, where he had his first experiences as a saxophonist since 1962 as a student of Brother Lawhorn in the parish of the Zion Congressional Church of God in Christ of Pastor Winans, head of the Winans Family . At Sacromento Community College he was a member of the jazz band. In 1970 he accompanied numerous R&B acts with The Impacs such as James Barnes and the Agents ( single: Free at Last) and The Dramatics ( single: Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get ), and with this band he released his first single That Good ol 'Funky feeling before. He then worked in California for five years, performing with Eddie Cleanhead Vinson , Johnny Heartsman , Roy Brown , Big Mama Thornton and other musicians. After a stay in Hawaii, where he studied with Q Martin, he moved to Chicago, where he played in the bands Lefty Dizz , Sugar Blue , Sunnyland Slim , Johnny Littlejohn and Pocketwatch Paul . Together with Christian Rannenberg he founded the International Blues Duo in 1982 , which recorded three albums and starred with Angela Brown , Valerie Wellington , Big Jay McNeely , Big Time Sarah, Roy Gaines, Charlie Musselwhite , Johnny Copeland , Johnny Heartsman, Jimmy Rodgers , Jeanne Carroll and Katie Webster went on tour.

In 1983 he moved to Germany and initially lived in Osnabrück, where he and Christian Rannenberg initiated the jam session of the legendary Pink Piano , in which Wiggins personal mentor Arnett Cobb and other stars of the international blues and jazz scene performed and Tommy Schneller decided To become a saxophonist. At the end of the 1980s, he founded the Detroit Gary Wiggins Group in Berlin , which performed in numerous European jazz clubs. He has also given concerts with Sam Leigh Brown ( Frank Popp Ensemble ), Big Time Sarah , Angela Brown, Ingrid Arthur and Dorrey Lin Lyles from The Weather Girls , Queen Yahna , Jeanne Carroll, Maisha Grant , Arnett Cobb , Louisiana Red , Carey Bell , Guitar Crusher , Roy Gaines , Tyree Glenn Jr. (also known as Aunt Tyree and saxophonist from Helge Schneider ), Albie Donnelly , Blues Company and ran the Blues Cafe Berlin in the 1990s .

From 1995 he presented the show The Saxman and the Divas in Paris and appeared in numerous Parisian jazz clubs such as the Caveau de la Huchette with Dany Doriz . In the next few years he also gave concerts in Japan. He also belonged to the band The Just No Posse and founded The Very Soulful Tenors Show (with Fuasi Abdul Khaliq and Ray Blue). He can also be heard on albums by Lefty Dizz and Shock Treatment, Klaus Lage , Bobby McFerrin , Fabrice Eulry , Roy Gaines, Robert Covington, Angela Brown, The Gospel Messenger and EB Davis , as well as on numerous blues samplers. He plays regularly in the Berlin jazz club A-Trane , performed several times at the Lahnsteiner Blues Festival and performed with Screamin Jay Hawkins at the North Sea Jazz Festival and in Greece. In 1977 he won the Gong Show with David Winans from the Winans Family and Rick Murphy as the "Show Biz Kids", in 2001 he received the 2nd prize at the Berlin Jazz & Blues Award , for which there was also a CD, as well as the prize of German record review for the album Accoustic Soul 1994 with Christian Christl .
