The Lahnsteiner Blues Festival started in 1981 as a SWF - Blue Festival . In 1998 it was renamed the SWR - and in 2002 the SWR1 Blues Festival. Since the withdrawal of the public broadcaster, it has been operating under the name Lahnsteiner Bluesfestival.

history

The first SWF blues festival took place on October 16, 1981 in the town hall in Oberlahnstein . Initiated by the journalists Tom Schroeder , Manfred Miller , Detlef Gattner and Thomas Dittrich, it was initially planned as a one-off event, but it could be continued. The 21st edition, planned for September 29, 2001, was canceled due to the cancellation of the booked US artists due to the attacks of September 11th . Following Manfred Miller (1981–1992), Tom Schroeder (1993–1994) and Thomas C. Breuer (1995–2010), the festival has been moderated since 2011 by the Heidelberg cabaret artist and musician Arnim Töpel . The poster for the 2008 festival under the motto The blues had a baby and they named it rock'n'roll was designed by Günther Kieser .

Artists who have performed in Lahnstein over the years include the Blues Company , Louisiana Red , Sippie Wallace , Charlie Musselwhite , Robben Ford , James Cotton , Roy Gaines, Walter "Wolfman" Washington, Hans Theessink , Lucky Peterson , Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown , Inga Rumpf , Larry Garner, Joe Louis Walker , Shemekia Copeland , Taj Mahal , Sharrie Williams, Georgie Fame , Michael Burks , Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings , Deborah Coleman , Thorbjørn Risager and Philipp Fankhauser . At times, more than half a dozen radio stations broadcast concerts from the festival, which the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung classified as the most important blues festival in Germany. In 1992 five albums with recordings from Lahnstein were released.
