Jeanne Carroll
Albertha Jeanne Carroll (born January 15, 1931 in Ruleville , Mississippi , † August 9, 2011 in Aalst , Belgium ) was an American blues and jazz singer .
Live and act
Carroll grew up in the state of Mississippi near Clarksdale and moved with her family via Memphis to Chicago , where she soon established herself in the jazz and blues club scene. During the Second World War she sang in the Charlie Agnew Orchestra, which was later engaged at El Rancho in Las Vegas ; she also appeared in the 1944 film musical Sing a Jingle (directed by Edward C. Lilley ). She eventually returned to Chicago, where she sang in clubs and recorded for the Adelphi Records label. In the course of her career she has performed with the orchestras of Count Basie , Duke Ellington and with Muddy Waters , Willie Dixon , Little Brother Montgomery ( Vicksburg Blues , 1969) and Buddy Guy .
In the mid-1960s she went on tour in the Pacific with Franz Jackson's All-Stars to entertain the US soldiers. In the 1970s she toured North America with the Art Hodes Jazz Four and performed with the Bessie, Billie & Bo Musical Revue in Chicago. She lived temporarily in Europe from the 1980s and gave concerts a. a. at the Ingolstadt Jazz Days and most recently in early 2011 in Berlin's A-Trane . She worked with German jazz and blues musicians, such as the Basic Blues Trio by Ignaz Netzer , Wolfgang Bernreuther and Gerd Gorke . In the 1990s she toured for years with the well-known German blues band Blues Mafia with Roland Bergmann (bass), Gerd Gorke (harmonica), Burkhard Elger (piano), Rainer Achterhold (guitar), Peter Samland (drums), Rüdiger Wilke (sax) . In 2000 they recorded the Live CD ("Delivering") together. Her daughter Karen was also a blues singer. Carroll died two days after suffering a heart attack while performing on August 7, 2011 with her daughter Karen at the Blues Oan Daa Stoazze festival in Hamme, Belgium .
The singer should not be confused with the actress of the same name, Jean Carroll (1911-2010).
Honors
The Chicago Tribune awarded her the title Singer Of The Century in 1972 .
