Gummidipoondi ( Tamil : கும்மிடிப்பூண்டி Kummiṭippūṇṭi [ ɡumːiɖiˌpːuːɳɖi ]; also Gummidipundi ) is a city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu with around 19,000 inhabitants (2011 census).
Gummidipoondi is located around 45 kilometers north of Chennai (Madras) in the Tiruvallur district in the hinterland of the coast of the Bay of Bengal . The border with the neighboring state of Andhra Pradesh is only eight kilometers away. The city is the capital of the talk rubber dipoondi .
Gummidipoondi is an industrial site, in addition to a factory for tire cord (Dupont Fibers) and a work that carbon black manufacturing (Hi-Tech Carbon), a number of small and medium enterprises is home. The city benefits from its good transport connections: the national highway NH 5 , which runs parallel to the east coast from Chennai to the north as part of the Golden Quadrilateral project, and the railway line from Chennai to Nellore , which is part of the northern line, run through Gummidipoondi the Chennaier Vorortbahn ( Chennai Suburban railway ) is operated.
88 percent of the rubber dipoondi population are Hindus , 8 percent Muslim and 4 percent Christian . As in all of Tamil Nadu, the main language is Tamil, which is spoken by 79 percent of the population as their mother tongue. 11 percent speak Telugu , 4 percent each speak Urdu and Hindi, and 1 percent each speak Oriya and Malayalam .
