Gunna Schmidt (* 1971 in Munich ) is a German artist . She lives and works in Berlin .

Life

Gunna Schmidt studied painting and sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Ben Willikens , Cristina Iglesias and Rita McBride, among others . She obtained her diploma in painting from Günther Förg . Her artistic focus is painting and installation. She lives and works in Berlin.

Gunna Schmidt's artistic approach is based on the idea of abstraction, her painting appears as a continuation of the experimental achievements of abstract expressionism , represented by artists such as Jackson Pollock and later Joan Mitchell .

In her large-format painting, Gunna Schmidt uses the material color in a way that, analogous to the American variant of European tachism ( initiated by Helen Frankenthaler ) , could be called stained canvas or stain painting . Heavily diluted paint sinks directly into unprimed canvas or raw nettle fabric and bonds with the fabric. This approach does not permit any corrections, but rather shows traces of the painterly action side by side.

In her small-format pictures Gunna Schmidt works with color in an emphatically material way. A mixture of different colored materials condenses in crusts and piles of paint on the surface of the picture. The paint here seems not only to have been applied, but also removed from the canvas, because some traces are similar to the traces of paint on a painter's palette. Analogous to this, the spots of color and traces of the large-format painting by Gunna Schmidt appear like wiping marks on a mallet cloth. The act of painting as such is thus expanded through the presence of its by-products.
