Gunnbjørns Fjeld (also Gunnbjørn , in the Icelandic sagas as Hvitserk , "white shirt"), at 3694 m (sometimes the height is also given as 3700 m) the highest mountain in Greenland , is also the highest mountain north of the Arctic Circle . It is located in the Watkins Mountains on the east coast of the island.

The mountain is named after Gunnbjørn , a Viking who, according to legend, discovered Greenland around 875.

The first ascent was on August 16, 1935 by Augustine Courtauld , Jack Longland , Ebbe Munck , Lawrence Rickard Wager and his wife Phyllis Wager . The mountain was not climbed for the second time until 1971 and the third time in 1987 because it is located in an extremely inaccessible region about 60 kilometers from the coast. The way to Gunnbjørns Fjeld is covered either by dog sledding , on skis or by plane or helicopter. The ascent to the summit pyramid takes place either via the south ridge as with the first ascent or via the northeast ridge. Most of the ascent is done in the form of a ski tour .

On August 18, 2014, as part of Arved Fuchs' Pittarak expedition, Pablo Besser, Cristian Donoso and Tim B. Frank managed to climb the summit. The trio needed 17 days for the difficult route from Dagmar Aaen, located in the J.C. Jacobsen Fjord, across several glaciers.

The first ascent of the mountain through the west face was achieved on May 10, 2015 by an Austro-German group with Stefan Peer, Elke Bolduan, Achim Bamberger and Geri Winkler.
