Gunther von Meißen († November 1, 1025 in Salzburg ) was Roman-German Chancellor under Emperor Heinrich II for many years and Archbishop of Salzburg for a few months .

Life

Gunther von Meißen was a younger son of Margrave Ekkehard I of Meißen , his mother the Billungerin Swanhilde.

He received his education in the famous Notkers School of Liège . In 1001 at the latest he became court chaplain under Emperor Otto III. and was under his successor Heinrich II. from March 1009 to December 1023 chancellor for the German part of the empire .

After the Archbishop of Salzburg, Hartwig von Ortenburg , died in December 1023 , Emperor Heinrich II installed Gunther as his successor. Heinrich put an end to the traditional ties between the archbishop and the Bavarian nobility - all archbishops from Pilgrim I to Hartwig were Bavarian aristocrats and were all closely related to one another.

Gunther died after only a short reign in Salzburg on November 1, 1025. The chronicler Wipo praised him for his mildness and goodness.
