Guru Har Rai ( Panjabi ਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇ * 16th January 1630 in Hoshiarpur , † 6. October 1661 in Rupnagar ) was the seventh Guru of Sikhs . He took up this office on March 8, 1644.

family

Har Rai was the son of Baba Gurdita and the Mata Nihal Kaur (also known as Mata Ananti Ji) and thus the paternal grandson of the sixth Guru Har Gobind . In 1697 he married Mata Kishan Kaur (also known as Sulakhni), with whom he fathered the sons Baba Ram Rai and Har Krishan .

Life

On the one hand, Har Rai followed the fundamentally pacifist orientation of Sikhism. Numerous anecdotes tell of the contrition of the guru when he accidentally kinked branches. On the other hand, Har Rai continued the military traditions of his grandfather Har Gobind and kept over 2,000 men under arms. He toured large parts of northern India and founded among other things 360 mission branches of the Sikh (Manjis). Another focus of his work was the fight against corruption .
