Gustav Stresemann Foundation

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gustav Stresemann Foundation e. V. (GSS) is a German Foundation Association, which after many years of foreign ministers of the Weimar Republic and founder of the National Liberal DVP , Gustav Stresemann is named. It is close to the right wing of the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) and was discussed as a party foundation.

history

The association was founded in 2011 at the right-wing populist and anti-Islamic Minor party " Freedom " to serve as a foundation. The foundation was established by the Jena lawyers Sascha Giller and Philipp Wolfgang Beyer . Both were on the Thuringian state board of "Freedom". After the party was dissolved in 2016, the association was no longer needed. The association is still managed today by the law firm PWB Rechtsanwälte (Philipp Wolfgang Beyer) in Jena. PWB also operates the AfD-related website “ Journalistenwatch ”. In autumn 2017, two AfD members took over the Stresemann association: the lawyer Rainer Gross, foundation commissioner of the Bayerische Landesbank in Munich, and the real estate entrepreneur Hannes Kernert (formerly DSU ) from Dresden. According to Gross, the AfD member of the Bundestag Marc Jongen is responsible for the substantive work of the foundation . Martin Hebner is also a GSS member from the AfD parliamentary group in the Bundestag .

At the beginning of 2018 there was a controversy within the party as to which association should be elevated to the AfD foundation . The association competes with the liberal-conservative Desiderius Erasmus Foundation registered in Lübeck for the favor of the party executive. As a party foundation, tens of millions are available from the federal government for its educational work. Alexander Gauland supports the Gustav Stresemann Foundation, while Alice Weidel is close to the Desiderius Erasmus Foundation.

By the end of January 2018, both foundations in question submitted their documents to the AfD party executive committee. The GSS sent the AfD a list of members of the board of trustees. Some of the members of the Board of Trustees on the list were not even asked whether they would like to belong to such a body. Thilo Sarrazin and the Eastern European historian Jörg Baberowski , among others , were listed, but were not informed and declined membership of the Board of Trustees.

In addition, u. a. Stresemann's grandchildren and other institutions propose to take legal action against the naming of the politician if the GSS should become an AfD party foundation.

At the AfD federal party conference on June 30, 2018, the decision was made in favor of the Desiderius Erasmus Foundation. However, if legally possible, this should be renamed after Gustav Stresemann.

financing

According to information from the Tagesschau , an entrepreneur from Saxony has endowed the foundation association, which was taken over by AfD party members, with capital of around 50,000 euros. In addition, according to the Tagesschau, several private donors had promised amounts of money well over 50,000. According to several AfD officials entrusted with the foundation decision , the EinProzent initiative has announced a financial injection should the AfD decide in favor of Stresemann. One percent is closely associated with the new right publisher Götz Kubitschek . The Islamophobic American think tank Middle East Forum , which promotes organizations of the New Right across Europe , also provided financial support to the foundation association.

A call for donations was published on the association's website in 2018, which was justified by the fact that “they want to dispute the name Stresemann for us”, so they are asking for donations in order to “go with the financing problems of a non-conforming foundation and the necessary expenses to get through legal disputes ".

Surname

Walter Stresemann, grandson of the former German Chancellor Gustav Stresemann , reacted indignantly when he learned of the AfD's plans for a party foundation. According to "Der Spiegel" he said: "We will examine all legal steps to prevent this." He and his sister Christina Stresemann were "shocked" by the AfD plans. Stresemann said the picture further: "What my grandfather finally represented out of conviction is fundamentally against what the AfD embodies." In January 2017, the lawyer for the descendants of Stresemann, Christian Schertz , declared that he wanted to enforce injunctive relief against the AfD in court. With the ideas of the AfD Stresemann would "never have in common", so Schertz. The use of his name would mean a post-mortem violation of personal rights.

The historian Andreas Rödder , board member of the Stresemann society that the care of memories has set Stresemann goal announced against DLF culture legal name to measures if the AFD should designate a party foundation under Stresemann. Stresemann was one of the very few European politicians in the first half of the 20th century who were willing to include the perspective of the other in their own opinion- forming, which did not match the foreign policy ideas of the AfD.
