Wilhelm Gustav Borgmann (born February 15, 1838 in Potsdam , † April 6, 1908 in Lichterfelde ) was a German local politician and mayor of Cöpenick near Berlin .

Life

The Köpenick town hall built on the initiative and during Borgmann's term of office

Borgmann was first mayor of Templin in Brandenburg . In 1871 he was appointed mayor of Köpenick. During his tenure, Borgmann implemented many innovations, including the construction of sewage and sewage pumping stations and a modern waterworks with electrically driven pumps built in the Müggelberg mountains . The work of Borgmann is also due to the contemporary redesign of the public roads and bridges and the expansion of the school system in Köpenick. Overall, the municipality of Köpenick on the outskirts of Berlin experienced a tremendous economic boom: factories were founded, the Kietzer (1873), the Köllniche (1874) and later the Dammvorstadt (1883) were built, with the population growing fourfold (17,000 people in 1904) . Köpenick had already received a railway connection around 30 years before Borgmann took up his duties in 1842. The town hall initiated by Borgmann and completed in 1905 on today's Alt-Köpenick street is a lasting testimony . When Gustav Borgmann retired in 1904, the city of Köpenick made him an honorary citizen .

He died on April 6, 1908, the funeral service took place in the town hall in the old town of Köpenick. Gustav Borgmann was buried in the Evangelical St. Laurentius Cemetery on Rudower Straße, in the “ hereditary burial ” of his family, in the vicinity of Köpenick's medical officer, Dr. Dead. His successor in office Langerhans said in his funeral speech about him:

“Gustav Borgmann was a precautionary - at times cautious - and always well aware of the direction of the city administration; a loyal, always ready assistant to the citizens, a participating adviser to those who had been hard hit by life; a friend and promoter of sensible humor and honorable character; all in all: by his nature and outward appearance the first citizen of our city. "

For a long time, the grave was considered lost. The exact location could be determined through the initiative of the Historical Cemetery Interest Group (IGHF) and the cemetery administration of the St. Laurentius Community. On April 6, 2008, on the 100th anniversary of Borgmann's death, the grave was inaugurated again with a festive service.

Honor

In 1896 a road was on Köpenicker Dammvorstadt from the Terraingesellschaft Parisius, Sörgel & Co. name Borgmann road . This street was not built until the beginning of the 20th century.
