Gustav Heider (born October 15, 1819 in Vienna ; † March 15, 1897 ibid) was an Austrian art historian.

Life

Gustav Heider studied law in Vienna, became an adjunct at the library of the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in 1842 , art advisor in the State Ministry in 1863, Ministerialrat in the Ministry of Education in 1867 and from 1872 took the position of head of section in the same. Heider did a great job of researching the old art monuments in Austria; He was one of the most active founders of the kk Central Commission established for this purpose, whose yearbook he edited until 1863. Among his writings, which aim in particular for a deeper understanding of the spirit of medieval symbolism and typology, deserve special mention:

  • On animal symbolism and the symbol of the lion in Christian art (Vienna 1849);
  • The Romanesque church in Schöngrabern (Vienna. 1855);
  • The altarpiece in Klosterneuburg Abbey (Vienna 1860);
