Gustav Heinse

Gustav Heinse (born Josef K. Klein ; * 1896 in Herceg Novi , Austria-Hungary ; † 1971 in Sofia , Bulgaria ) was an Austrian poet and translator who settled in Bulgaria.

Life

Gustav Heinse is the son of a Sudeten German Austrian officer and an Italian . His family predestined him to be an officer.

During the First World War , the young Heinse was sent to the Italian front . In his memoirs he said that after four battles he came to a pacifist worldview that rejects war in all its forms. In his own words, he was influenced by Hermann Hesse , Rabindranath Thakur , Romain Rolland and later also Rainer Maria Rilke (whom he calls his teacher ).

In 1924 he came to Sofia as an engineer for Siemens & Halske . He had married there and introduced them to Bulgarian culture. Gustav Heinse continued his literary activity in Sofia and dedicated himself to translating and popularizing Bulgarian authors in German-speaking countries.

Works

poetry

Some of his poems were published in Banat newspapers in 1916 and 1917. A number of poems from this collection were reprinted in 1922 in the Viennese magazine Das Tage-Buch . The period of the 1930s and 1940s was particularly fruitful, when Gustav Heinse published his poetic works The Garden (1932) and The Burning Mountain (1937).

The poem The Burning Mountain is a diary in poetic form and reflects the feelings of the author evoked by the experiences at the front.

It was not until 1993 that his works were published again in Bulgarian newspapers.

His novel Notes of a War Invalid was published in Bulgarian in 1996.

Translations

Gustav Heinses anthology Bulgarian songs (1937) contains poems by numerous Bulgarian poets such as Christo Botew , Dimtscho Debeljanow , Pentscho Slawejkow , Pejo Jaworow , Teodor Trajanow , Nikolai Liliew , Nikola Furnadschiew , Elissaweta Bagrjana . From now on he translated Bulgarian poetry with the intention of expanding the anthology. These translations are published in magazines such as Westermanns Monatshefte , Die Literatur , Der Türmer and in Bulgarian German-language magazines.

One of his most important contributions to popularizing Bulgarian literature in German-speaking countries is the edition of his translation of Dimitar Dimov's novel Tabak by Volk und Welt . Further editions of this translation followed in a short time.
