Gustav Hofmann (meteorologist)

Gustav Hofmann (born December 25, 1921 in Dürr , Eger district , Czechoslovakia ; † January 28, 2015 ) was a German meteorologist , physicist and university professor .

Life

The native Sudeten German Gustav Hofmann, son of the farmer Adam Hofmann and Marie-born Wirnitzer, who graduated from high school in Eger in 1940, then turned to studying physics at the German University in Prague , which he had to interrupt in 1942 due to the war. After moving to Germany, Gustav Hofmann continued his studies in 1946 at the University of Munich , in 1947 he obtained the academic degree of a physicist, in 1951 he was awarded a Dr. rer. nat. PhD.

After years of assistantship, he completed his habilitation in 1956 as a private lecturer in the subject of meteorology in Munich, where he was appointed adjunct professor in 1962 . In 1965 Gustav Hofmann accepted the call to the professorship for meteorology at the University of Cologne , where he also took over the management of the institute of the same name. In 1972 he returned to Munich in the same position, and in 1987 he retired .

Hofmann, who stood out in particular with his contributions to micrometeorology, was accepted into the Sudeten German Academy of Sciences and Arts in 1979 as a full member of the natural science class .

Gustav Hofmann married Gertrud, née Vogl, in 1947, with whom he had two children named Waltraud and Walter. Hofmann died in 2015.
