Gustav Kemmner

Gustav Kemmner (born September 17, 1875 in Unterensingen , † March 2, 1941 in Stuttgart-Mühlhausen ) was a painter .

Life

Urban Gustav Adolph Kemmner was born on September 17, 1875 in Unterensingen . His parents Christian and Christiane Kemmner were farmers . He attended the local elementary school and, as the firstborn son, was supposed to take over the parental farm. In 1895 he was drafted into the Württemberg military for two years . Afterwards he was able to convince his parents to devote himself to his passion, so that he began an apprenticeship as a lithographer in Stuttgart . He also took drawing lessons.

From around 1901 Gustav Kemmner had contact with the painter Julius Kornbeck from Oberensingen . He was kind of a mentor for Kemmner. In 1905 he entered the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart and was taught by Friedrich von Keller , among others . In May 1914, Gustav Kemmner took part in an exhibition at the Realprogymnasium in Nürtingen . In the same year had Kemmner the First World War to northern France and Flanders indent. He survived without injuries.

In 1920 Kemmner married the cook Karoline Leicht from Stuttgart. Until 1929 the couple lived in the so-called Schlössle in Oberensingen, the residence of their mentor Kornbeck, who had recently died. At the request of Kornbeck's widow Josephine, Kemmner completed the unfinished paintings of his mentor.

In 1929 Lina and Gustav Kemmner built a house in Stuttgart-Mühlhausen . Kemmner liked to travel and hike for his paintings. He enjoyed spending his time in the Swabian Alb , on the Ammersee , in Reutlingen or in the Dachau artists' colony .

The painter died in Mühlhausen on March 2, 1941.

Paintings and exhibitions

In 1927 one of his pictures was exhibited at the anniversary exhibition of the Württemberg Art Association in Stuttgart. They were also shown at the Hotel Ochsen in Reutlingen. After his death, some of his late works were exhibited at the Kunsthaus Schaller in Stuttgart. Many of his pictures were kept in a safe at the Dresdner Bank and destroyed in bombing raids during World War II. The largest collection of his works is now in his birthplace Unterensingen: The Gustav-Kemmner-Zimmer shows a permanent exhibition of his works.
