Friedrich von Keller (born February 18, 1840 in Neckarweihingen , † August 26, 1914 in Abtsgmünd ) was a German painter.

Life

Von Keller was born as the youngest of ten children of Johann Jakob Keller, a wine grower and gravedigger. His father died in 1849. Thanks to the support of some patrons, he was able to attend drawing lessons at the commercial advanced training school in Ludwigsburg. He had to make money as a craftsman. When he was eighteen he came to Stuttgart to attend the art school there, which he could not afford, however. He therefore attended the drawing school of the local polytechnic in the evenings. At the age of 27 he finally attended art school and was tutored by Bernhard von Neher and Heinrich von Rustige . Keller received the royal school scholarship of 125 ducats. While still a student he earned his living by painting coats of arms and letters.

In 1871 he moved to Munich, where he worked as a freelance artist. There he continued his studies as a guest student with Wilhelm von Lindenschmit at the Royal Academy of the Arts . His friends included u. a. Franz Defregger . In the period from 1872 to 1878 he created a series of realistic stone-breaker scenes.

Keller married on October 16, 1876. His son Fritz was born a year later and his daughter Ernestine Sophie was born in July 1879.

In 1883 he was appointed to succeed Carl von Häberlin as a principal teacher (professor) for painting at the Stuttgart Art School. His students included u. a. Bernhard Buttersack , Maria Caspar-Filser , Adolf Fleischmann , Oskar Schlemmer , Gustav Schraegle and Ernst Schmitz .

In 1908 he celebrated his 25th anniversary as a university professor at the Stuttgart Art School, which has now been elevated to an academy. He was awarded the Grand Cross of the Württemberg Crown by King Wilhelm II in 1909 . He retired in 1913 at the age of 73.
