Gustav Kober (born April 21, 1849 in Vienna , † September 3, 1920 in Wiesbaden ) was an Austrian actor .

Life

Gustav Kober was born the son of a businessman. Following private acting training with Emilie Door in Vienna, he made his debut in 1868 at the Elysium Theater in Stettin . After working at the German Stock Theater in Pest (now part of Budapest , Hungary ), an engagement at the Thalia Theater in Hamburg followed from 1872 to 1877 . From 1877 to 1881 he performed at what was then Meininger Hoftheater . Since that time in Meiningen he had a lifelong friendship with his fellow actor Josef Kainz .

After an engagement at the Residenztheater in Berlin , he returned to the Thalia Theater for two years from 1884. Further stations were Prague ( Deutsches Landestheater ) and Berlin (including the Lessing Theater and Theater des Westens ). Gustav Kober then took various guest tours from 1896 to Holland, England, Russia and the United States of America. From 1905 to 1915 he was a member of the ensemble at the New Royal Court Theater in Wiesbaden.

He played many leading roles during his theater career . For example, King Philip in Schiller's Don Carlos , Shylock in Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice and Franz Moor in Schiller's Die Räuber .

Gustav Kober is the father of the actor Erich Kober (1885–1955).
