"Savior of the Angel of Peace"

In obituaries, Matschl's achievement was sometimes highlighted as the “savior of the angel of peace ”: When the Bogenhausen angel of peace was to be stored in the museum due to corrosion damage in the early 1980s and the figure was to be replaced by a plastic replica, Matschl founded together with his CSU party colleague Paul Reinhardt the "Friedensengel sponsorship group". Among other things, they organized a festival at the Angel of Peace to collect money for the renovation. The initiative was successful, the so-called Angel of Peace Festival is still celebrated every year today.
