Gustav Niederlein , Spanish Gustavo Niederlein, (born January 1, 1858 in Großdehsa ; † March 23, 1924 in Santiago del Estero ) was a German-Argentine explorer and naturalist (especially botanist) who worked in Argentina. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Niederl. "

Live and act

Niederlein emigrated from Germany to Argentina in 1878, where he initially worked at the University of Córdoba with Georg Hans Emmo Wolfgang Hieronymus and collected plants in part on behalf of the Ministry of Agriculture. In 1879 he took part in the so-called desert campaign to Patagonia by General Julio Argentino Roca , which served the colonization of this part of Argentina and partially wiped out the indigenous population. There he collected plants and cataloged them (another participant who dealt with botany was Eduardo Ladislao Holmberg ). Results were presented at the World Exhibition in Paris (1889). From 1880 to 1882 he attended further studies at the University of Berlin and the agricultural college.

He also took part in an expedition on behalf of the Argentine government to the north of the country (area of the former Jesuit state in the border area with Paraguay and Brazil), also to collect natural history material for the world exhibition in Chicago (1893). The world exhibition also served to promote European settlers in Argentina. Niederlein himself also campaigned for German settlers in Argentina, for example by publishing information about the country in German.

His participation in the world exhibitions made him known and Niederlein also worked for the Commercial Museum in Philadelphia (founded by William P. Wilson ), the Colonial Museum in Paris and the Linden Museum in Stuttgart, which wanted to purchase objects from him. After the USA conquered the Philippines from 1899 to 1902 (with a significant part of the indigenous population being killed) Niederlein and Wilson were commissioned to collect material in the Philippines for the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exhibition in St. Louis. The natives of the Cordilleras were also presented at the world exhibition in order to demonstrate headhunting rituals, among other things .

Most recently he undertook collecting trips to Honduras, particularly in search of new orchids.
