Gustav Schultz

Gustav Theodor August Otto Schultz (born December 15, 1851 in Finckenstein Castle ; † April 21, 1928 in Munich ) was a German chemist ( organic chemistry , dye chemistry ).

Schultz studied chemistry from 1870 at the University of Königsberg and received his doctorate there in 1874 under Carl Graebe ( About the derivatives of diphenyl ). From 1875 to 1877 he was August von Kekulé's private assistant at the University of Bonn, where he made friends with Richard Anschütz , with whom he worked on phenanthrene . In 1877 he became a private lecturer at the University of Strasbourg , where he was teaching assistant to Rudolph Fittig .

Based on his expert opinion, Agfa , founded in 1873, bought the patent for the direct dye Congo red from Paul Böttiger , who had previously offered this to his former employer Bayer , among others, in vain . This was such a great success for Agfa that it later got Bayer and other dye producers into trouble and led to the formation of a cartel, the forerunner of IG Farben .

Schultz was for a short time director of the factory of the dye manufacturer Sandoz in Basel, completed his habilitation in 1885 at the TH Munich and became professor of chemical technology there in 1886. In 1923 he became a Privy Councilor and in 1926 he retired for health reasons. The Chemical and Technical Institute was rebuilt from 1910 under his full professorship.

As an expert on dyes, he published the standard work of the time, the Dye Tables , with descriptions of over 1400 organic dyes.

On April 13, 1891 he became a member of the Leopoldina . He was on the supervisory boards of several chemical companies in Bavaria.

It should not be confused with Gustav Schultz, the economic councilor in Soest, who published on field weeds at the beginning of the 20th century.
