from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gustav Alfred Senn (born November 9, 1875 in Basel , † July 10, 1945 there ) was a Swiss botanist and science historian in the field of botany. He researched movement and morphological changes in chloroplasts . In his later phase, Senn appeared as a Theophrastus researcher. The abbreviation Senn is used to identify the botanical species named by Senn. used.

life and work

Gustav Senn was a student of the German botanist Georg Albrecht Klebs . He worked as a professor of botany at the University of Basel . He was a co-founder of the adult education center in Basel .

Senn was the first to study the light-induced movement and arrangement of chloroplasts. He carried out physiological studies on chloroplast migration in response to external stimuli. He determined light paths in cells by measuring the refractive indices and the optical density of the cell compartments. He demonstrated that chloroplasts migrate into the most favorable area for them in terms of light intensity. To this end, he published his groundbreaking work in 1908, Die Gestalten- und Lageverwechsel der Pflanzenchromatophoren .

After the publication of this book, Senn withdrew from studying chloroplasts. He turned to the exploration of the Greek philosopher Theophrastus .

Gustav Senn was accepted into the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina in 1937 .
