Gustav Sure

Gustav Safe (also Gustav Benjamin Zeev Safe ; born August 21, 1880 in Klattau , Austria-Hungary ; died October 6, 1960 in Prague , Czechoslovakia ) was a Czech rabbi , translator and writer. From 1947 until his death in 1960 he was Chief Rabbi of Prague.

Life

After graduating from high school in Klattau, Gustav Safe studied at the Rabbinical Seminary in Vienna and then at Charles University in Prague , where he received his doctorate in philosophy in 1905 . He then worked for a short time as a teacher and rabbi in Innsbruck. From April 1, 1906 to 1928, he worked as a rabbi at the Jewish community in Náchod , East Bohemia , where he devoted himself to social activities and the Zionist movement . He also worked as a rabbi in the nearby Dvůr Králové from 1924 to 1928 . In 1928 he was appointed rabbi of the Královské Vinohrady district of Prague . As a member of the Association of Czech Rabbis, he was a member of the Committee for Spiritual Care in the Council of Jewish Religious Communities. In addition, he dealt with Zionist issues in the Misrachi movement . He has also written numerous articles for Czech newspapers and radio.

After the Munich Agreement in 1938, Gustav Safe emigrated to Palestine with his family in December 1939 . There he worked in the Jerusalem district of Rechavia as a rabbi for the community of Czech and Slovak immigrants. He also took on the spiritual care of the sick and dying in the Hadassah hospital in Jerusalem . After the Second World War he returned to Prague, where he was appointed Chief Rabbi in 1947. He continued his work with undiminished devotion.

In 1955 the artist Max Švabinský created a lithograph with the portrait of Gustav Safe.

Gustav Safe died in Prague on October 6, 1960. He and his late wife were given a grave of honor in the New Jewish Cemetery . Richard Feder became his successor in the office of Chief Rabbi of Prague .

Publications (selection)

Together with Rabbi Isidor Hirsch (1864-1940) from Karlin , Gustav Safe translated the Torah into Czech.
