Brewery and Agriculture

The property was the dairy farm belonging to Guggenthal Castle and is mentioned as early as 1272. In 1588 Andre and Maximilian Stainhauser are named as owners, in 1633 Countess Catharina Lodron, in 1642 the estate, still together with the castle (below, on Wolfgangseestrasse), came into the possession of the bishops of Chiemsee.

In 1861 Georg and Maria Weikl, a well-known family of beer brewers and wine merchants from Krems an der Donau , bought the estate. An inn and a beer brewery were set up; the master builder and architect Valentin Ceconi and his construction company Valentin Ceconi & Son were responsible for the planning and execution in 1864 , the manor house is still called Villa Ceconi today. A splendid company chapel , the Heiligenkreuzkirche Guggenthal , today a branch church, was built. The Weickl family even managed to become archducal chamber suppliers. At its best, many people lived and worked in the various buildings on the estate. Six companies had their warehouses in the now closed brewery, four parties lived in the Schlössl, a company was housed in the Moarhaus, work was carried out in the old forge until the new forge was built on the main road, and the milkers and servants lived in the staff house. 35 head of cattle were in the pasture.

The brewery was already closed in 1916, but the Guggenthal estate was then owned by the Hatscheks, the successors of the Weickls, and was still a very flourishing agricultural business. The Gasthaus Guggenthal ceased operations at the end of 1990.

The building complex has been abandoned today and has been in a structurally desolate state for decades, only the roof and the ceiling of the smith's house have been renewed. At times, the Viennese real estate exploitation Astropa was under discussion as the future owner, among other things with large catering, event center and cable car to the Gaisberg. In 2012, however, the property was taken over by three Salzburg residents, including the operators of the foundry , who successfully revitalized the Oberascher bell foundry there. They plan a cautious use appropriate to the ensemble, including upscale living and working and perhaps also the resumption of the brewery - a small special beer is already being brewed at the venue in Kasern .

On June 24, 2018, there was a major fire in which the brewery building burned to the ground. The cause of the fire is not yet known. In 2019, the remains will be torn down after the Federal Monuments Office lifted the monument protection due to the massive destruction.
