Guggenthal Castle (also Ansitz, Jagdschloss ) is located in Guggenthal in the Salzburg municipality of Koppl at the foot of the Gaisberg , directly on Wolfgangseestrasse , approx. 5 km as the crow flies east of Salzburg city center .

history

The hamlet and the place name “guck ins thal” appeared in documents as early as 1272. The next historical evidence relates to Andre and Maximilian Stainhauser, who owned the Guggenthal estate in 1588. After the bankruptcy of their trading house, Sebastian Stainperger, a Salzburg trader, acquired the property in 1627. His widow Magdalena Taxin followed him in 1630, but already sold in 1633 to Catharina Countess Lodron, b. Spaur. On July 14, 1640, the estate was exempt from all taxes. On December 20, 1642, Archbishop Paris Lodron let the court chamber buy the estate from his sister-in-law as administrator of the Lodron Primogeniture (today Lindenbichlhof , Guggenthal No. 9). Probably from Santino SolariParis Lodron donated the “new mansion” to Bishop Johann Christoph von Chiemsee on the condition that the Chiemsee “Schlössl ob der Gmain” (the Weiherhof in Morzg ) be used by the Salzburg canons - the Bishops of Chiemsee were the auxiliary bishops of the Archbishopric of Salzburg , and based in Salzburg. On June 1, 1670, his successor Johann Graf Preysing sold the estate including the mill to the high princely truchess Franz Carl Polito and his wife Maria Ursula Catharina von Grimming. When he took possession of the property, violent disputes began with the surrounding farmers. After Polito's death in 1683, a jurisdictional dispute broke out in 1691 between the Neuhaus nursing court and the Chiemsee Hofmark Koppl . It was then established that the entire Guggenthal estate belongs to the Neuhaus court. From then on, the estate was given to farmers by the bishops of Chiemsee. On December 4, 1875, after many intermediate stops, the Lindenbichlhof and the Schlössl were bought by Siegmund Hatschek, whose family still owns the property today.

Building description

The Guggenthal Castle (or Schlössl) has an almost square floor plan with two storeys and a high, almost pyramidal hipped roof over a wide coved cornice. A central aisle leads through the castle, from which one can reach the first floor via a steep wooden staircase. Above the eastern entrance door was the coat of arms of the Chiemsee bishop Franz Virgil Graf Spaur ; it was stolen in 2018. The western coat of arms, which was stolen in 2014, showed the coat of arms (lion with pretzel tail) of the Lodron family. On the street side there is a wooden crucifix behind a grating, on the mountain side there is a Madonna figure.

The property is under monument protection , is used privately, but is uninhabited and in danger of deteriorating.
