Guggenthal is a place in the Osterhorn group of the northern Alps in the state of Salzburg , near the city of Salzburg , and a place in the municipality of Koppl in the Salzburg-Umgebung district .

The rotting Guggenthal is 5 line kilometers east city center of Salzburg, 1 km outside the city limits in Gnigl , seitab on the B 158 Wolfgang road (Graz national road) , immediately after the Radauerkurven , the Serpenentinenanstieg in Obergnigl to about 610- 640 m above sea level. A. Elevation. Here the L 108 Gaisberg Landesstraße branches off to the Gaisberg (summit 1287 m above sea level , 2 km southeast of the village), Guggenthal are the first houses along the road. To the east of the town rises the Nockstein ( 1042 m above sea level ), a striking rock spur on the Gaisberg. The valley is that of the Alterbach , which separates Gaisberg and Heuberg ( 901 m above sea level ) and then flows into the Salzach near Salzburg-Itzling.

The village of Guggenthal has a little over 100 buildings with around 360 inhabitants. The place itself is divided into the houses on the main road at Gasthof Lang (Guggenthal) , Guggenthal-Kühberg (Kohlhub) towards the city on the city limits, and Gut Guggenthal above. The hamlet Gniglerbauern in the direction of Koppl also belongs to the local area.

The first documented mention of the Guggenthal estate, which gave the village its name, dates back to 1272.
A legend reports that originally it was believed that a dragon lived on the Gaisberg and looked down into the valley. The name can be derived as follows: Gugg-en-thal to "Look into the valley". This idea came up because there was often widespread devastation on the Gaisberg (fallen trees). However, this can be attributed to the unfavorable location and steep slopes of the Gaisberg. The credibility of this "legend" is controversial, but it is in the oldest record of the parish book and since there are no other theories that can be somewhat refuted, this legend is often referred to as "true origin".

Guggenthal Castle, as a stately residence, was mentioned as early as 1588.
In 1860 the estate wine wholesalers and reality owner Georg Weickl and his wife Else was acquired from Salzburg and a founder temporal industry Ensemble , the Good Guggenthal expanded. In addition to the existing inns, Lindbichlhof and Hufschmidhaus , the brewery, villa, church and outbuildings were added from 1864. The builder and architect Valentin Ceconi and his construction company Valentin Ceconi & Sohn were responsible for the planning and execution .

The place Guggenthal originally belonged to the independent community Gnigl . Only with the incorporation of Gnigl into the provincial capital Salzburg in 1935 did the local residents vote to join the municipality of Koppl. Efforts to solve the district of Guggenthal from Gnigl had already been made earlier.

Culture and sights

The old center includes the branch church Hl. Kreuz (and St. Elizabeth ) and the Good Guggenthal , an empty today brewery with Braugasthof , Moarhäusl (Stoeckl to Braugasthof), Villa Ceconi (Spießbraterei) Schmiedhäusl (Old Forge, Hufschmiedhaus) and the giant Brewery building ( banquet center ). The brewery building burned down to the ground in the morning hours of June 24, 2018. The Guggenthal hunting lodge is located down on the state road (the estate was originally the manor's dairy).
