The Nockstein is 1042  m above sea level. A. high, unexpectedly alpine-looking rocky peaks on the northeast slope of the Gaisberg in the north of the state of Salzburg . It is made of limestone and belongs to the northern limestone Alps . The mountain in the Flachgau municipality of Koppl has been increasingly used since the second half of the 19th century.

history

The rock formation is documented as early as 1188 because the knight family of the Lords of Nockstein settled in Koppl below .

A first climb was laid up by Gnigl in 1883 and named after the former governor Hugo Graf Lamberg . In 1907 the Austrian tourist club erected an obelisk on the summit, which was recently partially destroyed by a lightning strike.

In summer 2010, two stone sculptures by the Salzburg artist Georg Walter were erected in a gap just below the summit .

The Nockstein has been under discussion for a number of years because it lies in the planning corridor of the 380 kV Salzburg line (section Heuberg - Guggenthal - Gaisberg). In 2011 it was decided to choose the middle one of the three possible variants, Nockstein-West between Nockstein and Gaisberggipfel, Nockstein-Mitte am Nockstein towards north-east and Koppl-Steinbruch . The documents for the environmental impact assessment were submitted to the authorities for a preliminary examination in autumn 2012. A request from the municipality of Koppl to designate the Nockstein as a protected part of the landscape has been in the approval process since the beginning of August 2012. Despite a positive opinion from the official expert, the authority intends to reject this request, which the head of the authority announced via the media before the process was completed.

Geology and alpinism

Like the Gaisberg, the Nockstein is one of the local mountains of the nearby city of Salzburg . Although the summit is rocky and can only be reached on steep, narrow slopes, some of which are provided with ladders and wire ropes, the mountain is one of the most visited peaks in the vicinity of the city of Salzburg.

The morphological conspicuousness of the ridge results from a geological peculiarity. The ridge marks the northern limit of the Northern Limestone Alps, which is designed here as a thrust front over the flysch zone adjoining to the north and runs in the Salzburg area from Staufen via Kapuzinerberg and Nockstein to Schober. It is above all the variously differentiated rock structures and individual formations that give the Nockstein and its neighboring areas its "alpinity". This alpine character, which also manifests itself in a specific flora that is otherwise not found at this altitude, stands in contrast to the low absolute altitude of the area.
