The Good Wicheln was a mansion near Müschede (now city Arnsberg ). There is a quarry to the south, otherwise the Wicheln nature reserve is directly adjacent .

history

The origins of this main courtyard possibly go back to the Saxon-Carolingian period. In the 11th century, the Wicheln farm belonged to members of the Ezzonen family . Wicheln came to the Counts of Northeim by marriage . Wicheln gave these to the Bursfelde Monastery as a foundation property . At the beginning of the 12th century, the property came into the possession of the Archbishops of Cologne through exchange . This enfeoffed the lords of Ardey with the property. These used Wicheln as a residence until 1197. As an after-fief of von Ardey, the property came to a low-nobility family called von Wicheln. The Lords of Ardey sold all rights to the Archbishops of Cologne in 1310. The lords of Wicheln were thus directly subordinate to the archbishops as liege lords. By inheritance, the property passed into the possession of the Binolen family at the beginning of the 15th century and shortly thereafter the von Thülen family . From 1580 or 1598 Wicheln came to the von Ledebur family by marriage . The house became the headquarters of the Ledebur-Wicheln line .

Arising from the possession were important wood Count's prerogatives (see also Wood prerogatives ) in the marks of the Arnsberg Forest. The owners also held a hereditary position as wood judge.

Bernhard von Ledebur-Wicheln, who was the owner between 1676 and 1712, had a new mansion built in the baroque style , including a medieval courtyard . The architect was probably Gottfried Laurenz Pictorius from Münster.

After the death of Bernhard von Ledebur-Wicheln, his widow sold the property to Elector Clemens August I of Bavaria in 1726 . At the time of the sale, this included 262 Cologne acres of fields, meadows and pastures and 514 acres of forest. The property was administered by the electoral head winery in Arnsberg.

After 1803, the Hessian government, the legal successor to the electors in the Duchy of Westphalia, sold the manor house and the property belonging to it to a private owner. The building fell into disrepair since the 1960s and collapsed as a result of an attempt at renovation in 1983. Only the main portal was preserved and now forms the entrance to the local shooting range. The portal is a listed building.

The Wicheln riding stables with 60 horse stalls and a riding arena are located on the site of the former Wicheln estate.
