The Gutenberg School is a cooperative comprehensive school in Darmstadt-Eberstadt . It is named after the Mainz printer Johannes Gutenberg (probably 1399–1468).

Architecture and history

Gutenberg School as a whole

With their differentiated architectural design, the school buildings on the school island document the Eberstadt school history and the small-town school architecture in three construction phases from 1880 to 1908.

George School

In 1880 the Georgenschule emerged from a former barn. This schoolhouse was increased to two floors in 1886. A gymnasium was set up in his basement. The simple plastered building with a gable roof , which is also jokingly referred to as a cigar box, is adorned with a wooden roof console cornice. The windowless north facade has a decorative plaster with geometric patterns.

Ernst Ludwig School

The Ernst Ludwig School - called the Gutenberg School House after 1918 - was built in 1902 by the district building authority. Between the two gable, two and a half-storey corner buildings with slate-covered half-hip roofs, there is a two-storey central building with a raised central projection and a pointed tent roof . The base of the plastered sandstone building consists of gray natural stone. The central entrance has a seven-step sandstone staircase.

Gutenberg School

The Gutenberg School - formerly the Eleonor School - built in 1907 and 1908 is a three-part structure. In 2000 another building was added, where the auditorium, music rooms and some classrooms are today. Two gable, two-and-a-half-storey corner projections with a mansard roof over three axes frame a three-storey eaves connecting wing. In the middle of the connecting wing there is a clock tower with a Welschen hood and narrow dormers . The building has oval gable windows with garland decorations. The central entrance made of yellow sandstone has a three-step staircase. There are also framing pilaster strips in sandstone blocks. The basement consists of red sandstone ashlar masonry. Artful steel and glass canopies are located above the school entrances to the rear. At right angles to the school building, in the rear part of the property, there is a single-storey toilet building. This building is now used as a school toilet. The entire enclosure of the school complex has been preserved.

Monument protection

As a typical example of Darmstadt architecture from the 1880s to 1900s, the Gutenberg School is a listed building .
