Andre R. Guttfreund

Andre R. Guttfreund (* 1946 in El Salvador ) is a Salvadoran film director , film producer and filmmaker who was awarded an Oscar at the 49th Academy Awards in 1977 together with Peter Werner for the production of the short film In the Region of Ice .

biography

Guttfreund, the oldest of five children, the son of a Romanian actress and a German diplomat, attended the Verde Valley School in Sedona , Arizona and was a student at Tufts University . He grew up bilingual: Spanish and German. He studied production and directing at the American Film Institute Conservatory and graduated with a Master of Fine Arts. He worked at the Centro de Audiovisuales de la UCA and at the Jesuit school Universidad Centroamericana “José Simeón Cañas” in El Salvador and then at the Verde Valley School as well as in the companies Tallerista and Presidente Ascine. There he has headed the Salvadorian Film and Television Association (Ascine) as President since 2012 and was re-elected in 2014. After Guttfreund completed his master's degree in theater arts in London, he was invited there by Walter Béneke, who was then education minister of El Salvador, to start the “educational television” project with him. In this role, he also worked in an advisory capacity for the Ministry of Economic Affairs between 2014 and 2016. In the meantime he works as an advisor to the Film and Audiovisual Coordination Council and has been appointed special ambassador by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In 1977 Guttfreund was the first and so far only Central American to receive an Oscar in the Best Short Film category for his first film, In the Region of Ice . Guttfreund directed and produced films such as the television film A Perfect Match (1980), the film romance Breach of Contract (1982), the sports drama Abduction of Carry Swenson (1987), the dramatic western Cabalgando con la muerte (1989) and the mystery drama Femme Fatale (1991) with Colin Firth , Lisa Zane, and Billy Zane . He has also been involved in various roles in television series in the United States and Spain, such as the dramatic series LA Law - Star Lawyers, Tricks, Trials , Picket Fences - Tatort Gartenzaun and the comedy series Periodistas .
