Gwynt y Ddraig: Company sign in Pontybridd

Gwynt y Ddraig is a Welsh cider producer based in Pontypridd , about 20 km north of Cardiff . The company was founded in 2001 by Bill George and Andrew Gronow, who originally ran a cattle ranch in Pontypridd. Gwynt y Ddraig has been commercially represented in the UK market since 2004.

Starting position and production

In 2001 the company owners began producing traditional, natural cider. Originally this was only planned as a hobby or additional income, so only a few hundred hectoliters of cider were produced at the beginning. Annual production is now around 9,000 hectoliters (as of 2011). Around 60 percent of the apples required for juice production come from Monmouthshire or other growing areas in Wales and are processed directly after harvest. Further reference areas can be found in England . In contrast to most global cider manufacturers, the use of concentrate is completely dispensed with.

Market position

Since 2004 Gwynt y Ddraig has been able to give the British cider market new impetus. The marketing is within the UK continue to Wales concentrated. Gwynt y Ddraig is now considered the leading cider producer there. For several years now, the company has also been exporting to other countries, including Scandinavia , the Baltic States , the USA and Australia . Gwynt y Ddraig has also been represented in Germany since December 2010 .

Awards

Gwynt y Ddraig's first commercially produced cider, "Gold Medal Cider", won the CAMRA (Campaign for real Ale) gold medal in 2004 . Gwynt y Ddraig was the first company to bring the cider manufacturer's award to Wales.
