The Gymnasium Ettenheim is a general education high school in Ettenheim , a town in the south of the Ortenau district in Baden-Württemberg .

history

When it was founded in 1841, the Ettenheim grammar school was not a grammar school in the current sense of the word, according to the terminology used at the time, but a so-called higher citizen school , a form of the municipal school that was intended to prepare its students not for university studies, but for practical professions in the commercial sector and craft field. In the year it was founded, this higher middle school had three classes with a total of 82 students. In the school year 1861/62 the school was then expanded to six classes with a total of 218 students, whereby in 1871 the 6th class had to be omitted for a short time, presumably because of the lack of space. With the construction of the main building, which is still in use today, in 1875, the school got the 6th grade back. In 1884 the school was extended by a seventh grade and renamed Realprogymnasium . In what was then the German Empire, under the ordinance of March 31, 1882, Realgymnasien without prima (top class before the Abitur) were designated as Realprogymnasium . Following the example of the Karlsruhe reform school, the language sequence for the grammar schools was then determined in the course of the new curriculum. Thus, French from grades 5 to 13, Latin from grades 8 to 13, English from grades 10 to 13 and Greek was introduced voluntarily from grade 8.

First high school diploma

After the grammar school became a nine-class Realgymnasium in 1900, the first Abitur examination could take place at the grammar school Ettenheim in 1901 and a year later female pupils were admitted to the grammar school for the first time. The small gym, which is still used today for the upper school carnival ball or other events, was built in 1906 in the clinker brick style. The school orchestra, which is still practicing today, was founded in 1910. This year, for the first time, electrical lights were installed in some rooms of the high school. Two years later, specialist rooms for the natural sciences chemistry and physics were set up. The Ettenheimer Schulgemeinde, which is an indispensable support for the school to this day with numerous acquisitions or extraordinary donations, was founded in 1926.

School under National Socialism

In the course of the National Socialist takeover and the associated reform of the Reich School, the school was renamed the Johann Fischart Oberschule in 1936. Both the “ Gleichschaltung” and the anti-Semitism were clearly noticeable in the grammar school. Former, Jewish high school students reported defamation, marginalization and persecution during everyday school life. From 1935, when the Nuremberg Race Laws came into force, everyday school life for the Jewish pupils deteriorated noticeably and then initially reached its climax with the Reichspogromnacht in November 1938. Towards the end of 1938, Jewish students were no longer allowed to attend classes. In memory of the Jewish students from the Ettenheimer Gymnasium persecuted, expelled and murdered by the Nazi regime, the school erected a memorial plaque on the anniversary of the Reichspogromnacht on November 9, 2012. No documents exist or could no longer be found for the time of the Second World War . Presumably the National Socialists destroyed them shortly before the capitulation in May 1945. Since the main building had not been destroyed in World War II, it was initially confiscated by the Allies and used for their administrative purposes. Nevertheless, as early as September 1945, three teachers had started to resume classes in the office building.

New beginning and first modifications

At the beginning of the 1960s, both the rector's and the caretaker's apartment were closed and new classrooms were created; the drawing room was renovated during the same period. In the course of these measures, the biology hall and the associated collection room were also created. The first secretary was also employed at the grammar school in the school year 1959/60. This expansion of space was also noticeable in the increase in the number of students. For the first time in 1966 the school had two entrance classes; In the mid-1970s the school expanded to include twelve classes.

Upper school reform

In the 1977/78 school year, the upper school reform came into force. Thus, the students could choose courses for the first time. Also for the first time a high school ball took place this year. Due to space problems and the increasing number of pupils, a school pavilion was built at the end of the 1970s, in which three classes could initially be accommodated. The school's problems with space became oppressive in the 1982/83 school year because some classes in the school, which now has a capacity of 400 students, had to be relocated to external rooms (so-called hiking classes). As the number of students increased, so did the number of teachers. had risen to 43 and the school was consistently two-class (school year 1983/84). Due to the aforementioned lack of space, the school urgently needed a new sports hall, which could then be used for the first time from the 1982 school year (Herbert-König-Halle).

School expansion

In order to counteract the space problems, the new building was completed at the beginning of 1986 and the renovation of the old building and the small gymnasium began. At the end of the 1980s, a new athletics field was inaugurated, which significantly improved the teaching conditions in sports. The student-parent-teacher choir (SEL choir) was launched in 1990. In 1997, Spanish was introduced as an alternative third foreign language alongside Latin. Towards the end of the 1990s, a computer room was built in the course of increasing social technology.

As part of this modernization of the school, a new building with a total of 14 new rooms, which was attached to the original main building, was built and inaugurated in 2005. In addition, a large music hall, a foyer, a specialist (geography) and a meeting room were created. In 2013 the media renovation of all classrooms was completed. In 2005, the subjects natural phenomena and NWT were introduced for the first time . A year later, the last renovation work in the old building was completed with the establishment of an upper level study room (with PC equipment) and new library rooms.

The 8th grade art project, which was first introduced in 2007, remains an essential part of the individual school profile to this day. In July 2013, both the municipality of Ettenheim and the regional council of Freiburg confirmed the construction of a cafeteria with a new BK and NWT department in the area of the school grounds.
