The St. Wolfhelm High School is located in Waldniel, a district of Schwalmtal on the Lower Rhine . It was named after the blessed Wolfhelm (* around 1010), abbot of the Brauweiler Abbey .
history
The St. Wolfhelm High School goes back to the Rector's School, which was located in Waldniel as early as the 19th century. From this a Progymnasium developed , which enabled the acquisition of the secondary school leaving certificate. Since the number of pupils rose sharply after the Second World War and the pupils still had to switch to grammar schools in neighboring towns (e.g. Mönchengladbach) after the 10th grade, today's grammar school was founded in the 1960s. From the beginning it was run as a four-course grammar school and from 1969 onwards it was operated with grades 5 to 13. The foundation and planning was largely carried out by the Catholic clergyman Dr. Achim Besgen, who also became the first headmaster. Besgen was the only Catholic clergyman in Germany to be the headmaster of a publicly owned grammar school. Successor from Besgen was the Protestant theologian Hans-Peter Knauf; From 2001 to 2018 Barbara Cloeters was the school principal.
The school auditorium was extensively renovated in 2008/09 and technically brought up to a stand that also enables lavish theatrical performances there. Since then, it has served as a multi-purpose hall for the Schwalmtal community and has been called Achim-Besgen-Halle since September 2, 2009 . Since 2010 there is a cafeteria for the grammar school and the neighboring secondary school.
The school consists of two buildings with around 80 classrooms and a triple gymnasium. The nearby solar bath is also used.
