Hans Hermann Henrix (born November 21, 1941 in Schwalmtal, Lower Rhine ) is a German Roman Catholic theologian.

biography

Henrix studied economics in Cologne and philosophy and theology in Frankfurt , Innsbruck and Münster . He began his professional career in 1969 as a lecturer in theology and ecumenism at the Episcopal Academy of the Diocese of Aachen . In 1988 the then Aachen Bishop Klaus Hemmerle appointed him director of the academy. Henrix held this position until his retirement on November 30, 2005.

From 1985 to 1987 HH Henrix was the Catholic President of the German Coordination Council of Societies for Christian-Jewish Cooperation .

His main focus was on the relationship between Christianity and the Church and Judaism . Henrix advises the German bishops on questions of Judaism. On 16 January 2003 it appointed Pope John Paul II. For a consultor of the Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews . Pope Benedict XVI reappointed him to this office with the document signed by Cardinal Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone of March 18, 2008. At Henrix's own request, Pope Francis refrained from another appointment, so Henrix resigned from this office on February 19, 2014. His successor was the theologian Gregor Maria Hoff, who taught in Salzburg .

Henrix is ​​the author and editor of many books. He has also written more than 220 articles, essays and contributions for anthologies and journals and is a member of several editorial boards of theological journals. He is an honorary professor at the University of Salzburg, was a substitute professor at RWTH Aachen University and a visiting professor at the University of Salzburg, and is a member of scientific advisory boards at universities. He represents the German Bishops' Conference on the Advisory Board of the International Martin Buber Foundation and is one of the most important living promoters of the dialogue between Jews and Christians in the Catholic Church.

He is a member of the board of directors of the Adalbert Foundation . Henrix is ​​married and has three children.

Honors

The University of Osnabrück awarded him on 25 May 2000, the dignity of Dr. phil. hc , together with his important Jewish interlocutor, the Canadian Rabbi Erwin Schild . In May 2009 the University of Salzburg awarded Henrix the title of honorary professor.
