The grammar school of the city of Frechen is the municipal grammar school of the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Frechen in the Rhein-Erft district . It is the only grammar school in the city and one of the three secondary schools in the city of Frechen, in addition to the municipal secondary and secondary school. In 2017, around 1,050 students were taught by 83 teachers at the Frechen grammar school, and an international preparatory class has existed for the first time since the 2015/16 school year. As a certified MINT-EC school, the Frechen high school has a scientific profile.

history

On December 19, 1961, the Frechen City Council decided to found a municipal high school. This should be a high school for boys, at which girls could possibly also be taught. On April 18, 1963, the Frechen grammar school opened in the auditorium of the vocational school. The "Gymnasium iE" was housed in the founding phase of the former elementary school in Frechens, the Marienschule. The foundation stone for the school building in Rotdornweg was laid on March 20, 1964. In the same year, the school was expanded by two classes, which were again housed in the neighboring Marienschule. In 1965, the first class wing was finally completed on the Lindenstrasse / Rotdornweg school grounds. The construction of the northern wing was not finished until 1967.

In 1969 the number of students increased to such an extent that emergency solutions were required to accommodate the students. Therefore a pavilion unit was built, which was torn down again in 1999. The first year of Abitur was finally passed in 1970, whereby the Gymnasium i. E. eventually became a full institution. Since additional teaching space was needed, the construction of the extension house for the upper level and a language laboratory began in 1971. The opening of the building and additional rooms in the atrium took place in 1973. At that time, 937 students attended the high school. Another new building, which in addition to classrooms also contains special rooms for computer science, physics and biology, was added in 1997. An observatory and a photovoltaic system were also attached to the roof of the building.

In 2003 the school's media library was opened, which contains books and computers as well as specialist magazines. The foundation stone for the new cafeteria building, which in addition to the cafeteria also includes five specialist rooms for the subjects of physics and chemistry, was laid in 2011. The construction of the cafeteria was part of the all-day concept that has been in place at the Frechen high school since the 2010/2011 school year. Before the cafeteria was built, the nearby Schützenhalle was used as a temporary solution.

Special features and awards

MINT-EC school

The Gymnasium in Frechen has been one of over 300 MINT-EC schools in Germany since 2001 . The aim of the MINT-EC association is to attract and support students in the so-called MINT subjects of mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology. Through a special selection process, selected high schools can become members of a school network of excellence centers for mathematics and science subjects. Since 2009 this network has been under the patronage of the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs . Because of this, advanced courses in biology, physics and chemistry are offered and the astronomy project course works with the school's observatory. With the establishment of a junior engineering academy in grades 8 and 9, another MINT impulse was set in secondary level I.

Center of Excellence for Natural Sciences and Environmental Issues (LNU)

The center of excellence for natural sciences and environmental issues (LNU) was founded in 2001 primarily to promote particularly talented upper school students in the Rhein-Erft district . This is an association to promote the performance center for particularly capable and inquisitive students with a focus on natural sciences / environmental issues in the Erftkreis. In addition to the usual offer of the school, specific learning offers are to be created which represent an intellectual challenge for the students. On the weekends and during the holidays, special courses, laboratory internships and workshops are therefore offered for secondary school students in the region. In 2009, the LNU eV took over the sponsorship of the zdi center (future through innovation) LNU-Frechen Rhein-Erft. The zdi center LNU-Frechen Rhein-Erft is one of over 40 zdi networks in North Rhine-Westphalia. Future through Innovation.NRW (short: zdi) is a joint offensive to promote young scientists and engineers in North Rhine-Westphalia. With over 4,000 partners from business, science, schools, politics and social groups, it is the largest of its kind in Europe.

Business @ school

The high school in the city of Frechen offers the project course Business @ school , which is an educational initiative of the international management consultancy Boston Consulting Group (BCG). Since 1998, this has given upper school students the opportunity to convey business topics clearly and practically over an entire school year and thus to awaken and promote the students' economic understanding. Every year over 80 schools from Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Singapore and Austria take part in the competition. In 2006, the team from the Frechen grammar school won the NRW final with the “stay-dry technique”.

Comenius program

The high school is part of the Comenius program and also organized exchanges with partner schools in Ierapetra on Crete and in Acireale on Sicily. In October 2012, at the start of another Comenius school sponsorship, guests from Greece, Italy, Spain, Latvia, Poland and Bulgaria attended the school for three days.

Welcome class

Since February 2016, the school has set up a welcome class in which pupils from different countries of origin are accepted almost every week. In June 2016 there were 23 students between the ages of ten and 16 in the class. The nationalities represented are Afghan, Syrian, Iraqi, Albanian and Moldavian.

School of the future

In 2015, the Frechen high school received the “School of the Future” award for the third time for its many years of participation in the state-wide NRW campaign “School of the Future - Education for Sustainability”. The aim of this campaign is to give young people the skills they need to lead an independent life.

Sunworker

The high school student company "Sunworker" is committed to environmentally friendly development projects. In this context, a school partnership with a school in Andalamengoke, Madagascar, was established in 2004 under the name “Power to Madagascar”. The students are committed to improving the opportunities for training and the living conditions of the young people at the school in Andalamengoke. A primary goal is the energy and water supply. Together with Deutsche Umwelthilfe , the students collected old cell phones in order to donate the proceeds to finance the planned aid.

In 2008 the “Sunworker” won the environmental award.
