Life

After graduating from the Hölderlin-Gymnasium in Cologne- Mülheim, he studied theology, philosophy and Romance studies at the University of Bonn . After completing his studies, Richenhagen initially worked as a religion teacher at the Frechen high school . After taking office, he decided, on the advice of former BDI President Thumann , to switch to business. He worked at Hille & Müller Stahl in Düsseldorf from 1985 to 1995, from 1995 to 1998 as Senior Executive Vice President of the elevator and escalator manufacturer Schindler Deutschland Holding GmbH , from 1998 to 2002 as Managing Director of Claas KGaA mbH, and from 2003 to 2004 as a member of the Board of Forbo International SA in Switzerland. Since 2004 Richenhagen has been with AGCO , the world's third largest manufacturer of agricultural machinery . On August 20, 2020, Richenhagen announced that he will be retiring at the end of 2020. His successor is to be Eric Hansotia, the group's previous Chief Operating Officer.

Since November 2008 Richenhagen has been Chairman of AEM (Association of Equipment Manufacturers), the US association of machine manufacturers. In December 2008 Richenhagen was appointed honorary professor for management in agricultural engineering at the TU Dresden . Richenhagen is the only German CEO of a US Fortune 500 company . In 2004, his total salary was $ 1.6 million.

At the AGCO subsidiary Fendt , Richenhagen wanted to increase the work target for the production sites in Germany from 35 to 38.5 hours per week without compensation. This project failed due to the resistance of the union IG Metall . The dispute was settled in late 2008 after long negotiations. The US group announced that it would invest around 170 million euros in the Allgäu over the next few years.

Before the US presidential election in November 2012 , he heavily criticized the incumbent Barack Obama and accused him of failure in economic policy.

In March 2018, Richenhagen resigned from his post as a member of the President's Advisory Council on Doing Business in Africa amid anger over Trump's dismissal of Secretary of State Rex Tillerson . In an interview afterwards, he said that he had always thought that Trump's populism was just a scam to win the election . Trump brings the same simple messages in a small circle as in media statements. He is uneducated, a bad listener and he has no idea about economics. Trump surrounds himself “more and more with radicals, nuts and outsiders.” Trump is not an entrepreneur at all. He made his money by ripping other people off.
