Championship round
The teams in the first eight places were divided into two groups. The teams in first to fourth place were awarded additional points (two points for first and second place, one each for third and fourth place), which they can take with them into the round. The first and second placed in these two groups played against each other in the semi-finals.
In the event of a tie, it is not the direct comparison or the goal difference that is decisive, but the placement in the main round.

Relegation round
The teams in places nine to thirteen should complete a simple round of relegation, with the teams in places nine and ten being awarded two additional points and the teams in places eleven and twelve one additional point. The last placed in this round should determine the last participant in the Håndboldligaen 2017/18 against the winner of the play-offs of the 1st division. However, the HC Midtjylland withdrew after a matchday; the only played game was lost with 25:37 against SønderjyskE.

In the first round, the second and third placed in the 1st division should originally determine the participant in a 2nd round against the fifth placed in the relegation round. However, due to the withdrawal of HC Midtjylland, the winner of the first round rose directly this season.
