Helio Alves

Hélio Alves (* 1966 in São Paulo ) is a Brazilian jazz pianist .

Alves, whose parents are pianists themselves, took piano lessons from the age of six. At the age of 18 he began his studies at Berklee College of Music in Boston , which he graduated in 1990. On the advice of Claudio Roditi , he moved to New York City . He worked as a member of Santi Debriano's Circlechant and with Paquito D'Rivera , Joyce Moreno , Dave Samuels , Gato Barbieri , Paul Peress, Airto Moreira and Herbie Mann . Between 1995 and 1997 he toured with Joe Henderson's Double Rainbow Quartet . He also founded his own trios with John Patitucci and Al Foster or Nilson Matta and Duduka da Fonseca , with whom he has released albums since 1998. In 2003 he was involved in several Grammy- winning albums : Yo Yo Mas Obrigado Brasil , Joe Henderson's Big Band and Paquito D'Riveras Brazilian Dreams . He can also be heard on albums by Slide Hampton , Louis Hayes , Sadao Watanabe and Rosa Passos .

Since 2014 he has been playing with his Brazilian Trio and the German vibraphonist Wolfgang Lackerschmid .
