The Höllbachgspreng is a wooded rock massif below the Großer Falkenstein near Lindberg in the Bavarian Forest not far from the border with the Czech Republic .

geology

The basin with its extremely steep edges owes its formation to the last Ice Age. A mountain hiking trail leads through the jungle area . The Große Höllbach flows through a narrow, incised gorge between rocks made of gneiss, some as high as a house . At the northern border of the area it plunges into the depths as a waterfall. The west of the area is dominated by the Großer Falkenstein.

Flora and fauna

On the slopes you can find sycamore maple , spruce , red beech , silver fir and mountain elm . The understory consists of, among other things, rare plants such as mountain lady's fern , seven-star , sundew , Turkish league and Hungarian gentian . The extremely rare sulfur lichen grows on the rocks . The area is relatively poor in bird populations with only 36 species and a small number of individuals, for which the stream with the cold air flowing through is particularly responsible.

trail

A hiking trail leads through the gorge to the summit of the Großer Falkenstein. The wild and romantic path is only recommended for experienced and persevering hikers, as it is very steep, sometimes crosses the stream over stones and sometimes fallen trees have to be overcome. In any case, surefootedness and sturdy shoes are required. The ascent takes around 1.5 hours from the Höllbachschwelle. The path through the gorge is closed from February to June to protect the breeding peregrine falcons; the diversion leads over the Sulzschachten.

Nature reserve

As early as 1860, at the suggestion of nature lovers, it was decreed that the area, which is difficult to access, should be spared forest use. So the primeval forest-like character has been preserved to this day. The Höllbachgspreng nature reserve was created by VA. of the government of Lower Bavaria and the Upper Palatinate of January 17, 1941, Reg.Anz. Issue 26/28 created. It had a size of 51.3 hectares. Since the national park extension in 1997 it has belonged to the Bavarian Forest National Park . Accordingly, a year-round climbing ban on the rocks of the Höllbachgspreng applies.
