Wolfgang Scherzinger (born January 20, 1944 in Vienna ) is an Austrian zoologist , ethologist and ecologist . As an ornithologist , he has emerged as a specialist in owls . He has also intensively researched the Bavarian Forest National Park and its living world and has played a key role in its development since 1971.

Life

In his youth, Wolfgang Scherzinger ran a small zoo with numerous animals, including up to sixty owls, in a garden with his friend Hans Frey. He studied zoology and botany as well as philosophy and psychology at the University of Vienna in his hometown . In 1969 he was there with the dissertation to action system Sperlingskauzes [Glaucidium passerinum, L.] to Dr. phil. PhD . After working as a research assistant at the Institute for Comparative Behavioral Research at the Austrian Academy of Sciences , he worked as a zoologist at the Bavarian Forest National Park Administration from 1971 until he retired in 2007 . One of his main tasks, an animal husbandry for the resettlement of the formerly home in the Bavarian forest species owl , Ural owl , capercaillie and Raven build and for public viewing enclosure and provide support.

Scherzinger wrote numerous publications about the national park, especially on its bird life , especially grouse and woodpeckers . He undertook field work on the ecology and protection of bird species in natural mountain forests and dealt with the dynamics of natural forest communities . He summarized his findings in the book Nature Conservation in the Forest. Quality goals of a dynamic forest development (1996), which is one of his main works. Scherzinger represents the mosaic cycle concept .

However, he achieved wide fame - also beyond the narrow ornithological specialist group - through his work on owls . Scherzinger not only bred and kept all native owl species, but also intensively researched their way of life for decades. In addition to numerous articles in specialist journals and other print media , he presented major scientific studies, for example in his dissertation on the behavioral biology of the pygmy owl (1969) and in his monograph on the ethology of reproduction and youth development of the Ural Owl (Strix uralensis) with comparisons to the Tawny Owl (Strix aluco) with which he in 1986 at the University of Vienna habilitation . In addition to specialist reports on the breeding and resettlement of eagle owls and owls in the Bavarian Forest, Scherzinger published articles on the behavior and voices of eagle owls, owls , snowy owls and little owls as well as rabbit owls and Brahma owls . He worked on the chapter owls in the Handbook of Birds of Central Europe . A standard work is the book Die Eulen Europas (2000), written together with Theodor Mebs , in which all 13 owl species occurring in Europe are described in detail. It is considered to be the most comprehensive German-language reference work on this group of birds at the beginning of the 21st century. More recent publications dealt with the reaction of the bird world, especially woodpeckers, to the "bark beetle problem" in the Bavarian Forest National Park; Behavioral sketches of the Chinese hazel grouse and the owl of David .

He wrote numerous reports for national parks, forest reserves and other topics.

Wolfgang Scherzinger taught at the University of Vienna from 1986 to 1988 and is a university lecturer at the University of Salzburg . In 2004 he went into partial retirement . He has lived in Bischofswiesen with his wife since December 2008 .

Volunteer work

For several years he was district group chairman at the State Association for Bird Protection in Bavaria . It was active in nature conservation councils at all levels from the district to the Bavarian Ministry of the Environment.

Scherzinger is involved in ornithological associations for the practical implementation of the findings on owl and nature conservation. From 1994 to 1998 he was chairman of the German Working Group for the Protection of Owls (AG Eulen) and, together with Norbert Schäffer, heads the project group "Nature Conservation & Ethology" at the German Ornithological Society (DO-G) . He has been a member of the scientific advisory board of Nationalpark Donau-Auen GmbH since 1997 .

Honors

The state association for bird protection in Bavaria awarded him his badge in gold. The Free State of Bavaria awarded him the Bavarian Environmental Medal in 1997 for his work in the field of nature conservation . At the 11th International Owl Festival in Houston , Scherzinger was awarded the Champion of Owls Award in 2013 and was inducted into the World Owl Hall of Fame. In 2016 he was accepted into the honor roll of the AG Owls.
