The Große Falkenstein from Jungmaierhütte

The Große Falkenstein is a 1315 meter high mountain in the Bavarian Forest , about five kilometers southeast of Bayerisch Eisenstein in the Falkenstein-Rachel area of the Bavarian Forest National Park .

view

From the summit cross you have a wide view to the west and south of the Großer Arber , the Großer Osser , the city of Zwiesel and the Großer Rachel .

To the west lies the Kleine Falkenstein , another notable vantage point, 125 meters below .

Promotion opportunity

The ascent to the summit is possible in around two hours via the blueberry, yew, silver leaf and ash hiking trails with the starting points at Zwieslerwaldhaus , Kreuzstraßl and Scheuereck . Worth seeing is the so-called Höllbachgspreng , a rocky area with a stream that rises in a ravine and plunges in several waterfalls and numerous rivulets down to the Höllbachschwelle, a small lake. The path through this area is extremely strenuous and should only be used by experienced hikers.

Shelter

On its summit there is a shelter of the Bavarian Forest Association , Zwiesel section , which is managed daily in summer and at weekends in winter and allows overnight stays. The Falkenstein refuge was built from autumn 1932 according to the plans of Straubing's city architect Oskar Schmidt, opened to the public on January 7, 1933 and inaugurated on June 15 and 16, 1933 during a field fair by the Ludwigsthal priest Maier. At that time it already offered 30 overnight stays.

On September 12, 1975, after two years of renovation and expansion work, the shelter was reopened in front of 2000 participants. Since then, it has offered 60 overnight accommodations.

In January 2018, the members of the Bavarian Forest Association voted unanimously for the demolition and the new construction of the shelter. The groundbreaking ceremony for the start of construction took place on June 22, 2018.

Geotope

The summit cliff of the Großer Falkenstein has been designated as an important geotope by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment (Geotope number: 276R022).
